Pooja explains that “any carb will have a similar effect because carbs are converted to glucose, and glucose requires insulin. Once insulin rises, tryptophan stimulates the brain to get essential fatty acids into the brain.” And guess what? He adds: “This process leads to an increase in melatonin and serotonin, which are calming hormones that induce sleep.”

Make sure you eat fewer carbohydrates in your meal. “Your lunch should be 50% vegetables, 25% protein, 25% carbohydrates,” advises Pooja. Go low on proteins, too, because they will contribute to your tryptophan levels, and you don’t want that, do you?
